Why a consistent username actually matters
A handle that matches (or nearly matches) across every platform makes you easier to find, easier to remember, and harder to impersonate. The cost of picking a username platform-by-platform, without checking availability elsewhere first, is ending up with three or four different handles for the same identity — confusing for anyone trying to follow you across networks.
Because availability checks rely on each platform's public profile pages rather than an official (and mostly private) availability API, results are a strong heuristic rather than a 100% guarantee — always confirm directly on a platform before building a brand around a handle it reports as available.
FAQ
How accurate is the availability check?
It's a heuristic based on whether a platform's public profile page responds as existing or not, checked directly by our own server. It's usually right, but always verify directly on the platform before committing to a handle.
Why does it say "unable to verify" sometimes?
Some platforms rate-limit or block automated checks (Instagram in particular blocks this fairly aggressively); when a check genuinely can't complete, we tell you honestly rather than guess.
Does checking a username cost anything or require login?
No — it's free, requires no account, and the check runs from your own browser.
